How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic treatments are used to correct crooked and misaligned teeth or malocclusion (underbite or overbite). If these conditions aren’t treated, they can cause problems such as chronic jaw pain, damage to the teeth, and an uneven smile. Orthodontic treatments such as braces and aligners gently reposition the teeth, so they are straight and even.

Metal Braces

Metal braces use brackets, wires, springs, and elastic bands to reposition the teeth into their correct alignment. Treatment takes approximately two years for most patients, depending on the amount of correction needed. The braces must be checked and adjusted regularly to ensure the teeth move to the correct positions.

Invisalign® Clear Aligners

Invisalign® plastic aligners are an alternative to metal braces. The aligners are unnoticeable while you wear them, and you can remove them when you eat or brush your teeth. Invisalign® works the same way as braces, and you will need to see your dentist regularly to check your progress and receive new aligners. The treatment time depends on the amount of correction required.
